Goolwa, South Australia

Fleurieu Peninsula Australia
Goolwa Beach, South Australia
I'd like to introduce you to Goolwa, the town where the Murray River meets the Southern Ocean and was made famous in the late 70's for a locally made movie, Storm Boy. Or as I like to call it Home. No matter where in the World I am living or exploring THIS is what I am referring to when I say 'my home'. It is where my love for the beach was cemented, where lifelong friendships were made and where a good majority of my happy memories are from. I am so grateful that I got to have a childhood here and I wanted to share some of the fun with you.

Goolwa can be found 45 minutes from Adelaide in region known as the Fleurieu Peninsula. It has a vibrant community and there is always something to do. Here are some ideas to get your adventures there started.

Book a surfing lesson.

Goolwa Beach is perfect for anyone wanting to learn to surf and I have just the man for the job! Give Chris from Kingosurfing a call and book a lesson asap. He's a super chill surfer dude with a ton of knowledge and the ability to make even the most nervous student have a lot of fun.

Sample the local brew.

Head to Goolwa Wharf where you will find The Steam Exchange Brewery. I am seriously impressed with their G-Town gin, I have never tasted another gin like it. It is distilled with locally sourced botanics including Samphire and Native Pepper Berries and is seriously smooth. I'm told the ale is delicious too. Check the Breweries website for up to date info.

If it wasn't pre-lunch I would have tried the Goolwa Moonlight too, so tempting.

Go to a farmers market.

Another great way to sample the local fare is to visit the farmers markets. The Goolwa Wharf Markets run on the first and third Sunday of each month and there are a ton of others in the nearby towns. The following images are of the Victor Harbor Farmers' Market which is on every Saturday morning and only a 20 minute drive from Goolwa. Make sure you check the Around You website for a listing of all current markets.

There are of course a million more things to do an see in Goolwa but I think part of the fun of an adventure is discovering gems for yourself. Have you ever visited my home town? What did you do when you were there?

One last note: don't forget to chase the seagulls!
